Vertigo

Overview:

Have you recently experienced an imbalance in your body after getting up from a seated or lying down position? Or have you been hearing a ringing in your ears and don't know the cause of it? A vertigo diagnosis appointment with us might be just what you need for overall wellness. Here's what you should know about vertigo and how its caused.

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is the sensation of dizziness that a person experiences as a result of several different illnesses or disorders. For many patients, vertigo feels like their body or environment is moving or spinning without their control. Others may just experience the sensation of being imbalanced.

What Are the Causes of Vertigo?

Vertigo can be caused by many different illnesses, including:

  • Inner ear illnesses such as acute labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis
  • Meniere's disease caused due to a change in fluid levels in the inner ear
  • Trauma to the head or neck
  • Low blood pressure
  • Type 1 diabetes or other autoimmune disorders
  • Migraines
  • A brain tumor
  • Seizures

For many patients, the experience of feeling imbalanced or dizzy is just one of the symptoms of vertigo. Patients may also experience:

  • Clumsiness
  • Loss of hearing
  • Increase in migraines
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and ear pain
  • Confusion
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of fine motor skills
  • Sweating and a pale complexion

What to Expect During a Vertigo Diagnosis Appointment

If you've never had vertigo diagnosed before, you might wonder what to expect during your appointment. An ENT physician or audiologist at Starwood Audiology will begin by asking you a series of comprehensive questions to determine your current health status, as well as all the vertigo symptoms you may currently be experiencing. A physical examination of your head and ears is common, and depending on your symptoms, you may also undergo:

  • Vestibular rehabilitation sessions that include the Epley and Semont maneuvers for patients with inner ear illnesses
  • Hearing tests
  • Imaging and blood tests
  • Dynamic visual acuity tests
  • Coordination tests to determine your motor skills
